One of the principal causes of wooden damages are the xilophogos insects, as the woodworm.
One adult female can reach to place til 80 eggs in cracks, fissures and joints. From this eggs will be born the larvas, which just to go out donīt use the same holes used by theirs mothers to go in but they make a new large galery following the soft grains in the wood, in a process that takes 3 years. At the end of this period the larvas grow a lot in a few weeks until become an adult insect, showing a round and little hole with a diametre between 1,5 and 3 cms. Then we use to discover that the wood gets moth eaten and we try to recover it from the desaster we didnīt notice before. We can see that the larvas leave a small leftovers of sawdust when they are near the surface, is an evident sign of wood being devoured.
The favorite wood for this annoying little animals, and some other no so well-known but with the same behaviour, is the dry wood that let them an easy excavation. They donīt like so much the hard wood , the young one or the old one either. For that reason a lot of antiques pieces of furniture present a little sign of having suffered by the woodworms but they will not be hardly attacked.
First we have to do after we discover the sawdust near our piece of furniture itīs check if the woodworm has gone or it still staying in. We must look inside the woodworm holes. The recient galeries are clean and polished, sign of it could there be more, while the old holes are dark and dirty with dust.
If in our piece of furniture appear the two types of hole it means that the woodworm is still inside. If only appear the old hole, the woodworm has gone from the wood and it not necessary to do a strong defence.
To manage to get rid of this voracious tenants from our piece of furniture we can put in an anti-woodworm liquid, helpt with a syringe to get into and impregnate the most internal grains. An alternative method is using an anti-woodworm spry with a very thin pipe making the same effect as the syringe.
